STAY LIKE A LOCAL AT MILOS

Milos, the island of Aphrodite!

Hello and welcome to Ariadne Suites! We are Yota and Paolo, a greek and an Italian who fell in love with the island of Milos many many years ago when it still was a secret destination shared mostly among greek couples.

We want to thank you for choosing our suites for your stay and we want to make sure you will have an amazing time in Milos and love it as much as we do. Here are our secret tips only for you! All suggestions below are based on our personal experience of visiting the island for more than 20 years and the things we love to do every time we are here. We used some information from this article from cntraveller to give you a better description of the places we picked for you.

Tip: We advise you to check the wind windfinder.com before you start exploring the island. When the wind comes from the north then visit the south beaches and vice versa.

Transport

Once you arrive on the island, you can rent either a car, a moto or a quad; all options are equally good. This is a relatively big island, so with the moto you might not be able to access the more remote beaches. We do not recommend renting a bike as it is very common to see accidents due to the strong winds. The island also has a bus service that stops at some of the most famous beaches, though if you really want to explore it properly you will need your own transport. Riva Travel is the agency managing our suites and they also do car/moto/squad rentals.

Beaches you must explore

Firiplaka beach

The sooner you get there, the better, as parking is limited and during peak season this beach gets quite busy. You can either rent an umbrella in the bar or use a small part of the beach that is without sunbeds.

If you’d like a bit of adventure, visit Tsigrado beach right next to Firiplaka. This is a very small beach in the south of the island; the adventure is accessing it! To get there, you will need to climb down a steep slope with the help of a rope, though a clamber that most fit people could do. This beach is not organized so also make sure you take supplies with you.

Sarakiniko beach

This is a must-see and only 2 minutes drive from Ariadne Suites! Take your camera with you and prepare for breathtaking scenery. With white rocks carved by the wind and surrounded by crystal clear blue sea, this incredible location makes you feel like you’ve stepped onto the moon. To make the most of it, we recommend visiting this beach when there are not strong winds as it is in the North part of the island. We love visiting this beach during full moon, the reflection of the moon to the white rocks of Sarakiniko is something unique!

Plathiena beach

This beach is also at the northern part of the island. There is a small beach bar, and plenty of trees if you prefer some shade. We love going to this beach early in the morning to enjoy the crystal clear waters and the quiet of the place. One of our favorite things to do at Plathiena is snorkeling by the rocks on the sides of the beach.

Paleochori beach

Visit one of the most popular beaches on the island Paleochori. This is a managed beach, so you’ll find plenty of beach bars. You can also have lunch in one of the restaurants located above the beach, enjoying beautiful views of the Aegean sea (we suggest Sirocco volcanic food)! Make sure to get your mask as the bottom of the sea is something unique; beautiful colors, rare fish and warm streams of water make Paleochori our favorite snorkeling spot of the island.

Activities

Some of the most beautiful beaches of Milos are only accessible by sea. When weather permits, renting a boat and exploring the hidden gems of this island will be a unique experience. If you are not feeling that adventurous, then you can join one of the guided tours.

We highly recommend taking a day-long cruise of the island and visiting the Kelftiko beach, only accessible by the sea. We have used a few times Excellent Yachting as we find the overall service very good (http://www.excellentyachting.com/en/daily-cruises/round-of-milos ). You will start early in the day from the port of Adamas, visit amazing beaches and then head to Kleftiko beach where they will take you to explore the caves and the crystal waters on a safari snorkeling tour. Food and a tourist guide are included in the price.

For a more private experience, Saltyrides is our choice. Manolis is a native from the island who will offer an exclusive experience only for you.

Start your day early and visit the ancient theatre of Milos and the catacombs. Make sure you take a hat with you ;)

Milos is famous for its amazing views of the sunset. Our favorite spot on the island is at Plaka village, at the top of the hill of Profitis Elias. Another alternative is the Utopia Café again at Plaka (be sure to arrive a bit earlier, as the café gets very busy around sunset). Spend the rest of your evening in Plaka, enjoying the labyrinthine streets and discovering its hidden gems. We always buy souvenirs from Marmara Sand Museum where all creations are made with sand from Milos’s beaches.

In the afternoon head to the village of Apollonia. The village is located about 30 minutes from Adamas port and offers numerous dining options and a pleasant walk by the sea. Many tourists choose to stay there as the village has a wide range of accommodation, though we find it a little remote for our tastes and normally choose to stay closer to Adamas. Our favorite restaurant there is Gialos.

My favorite dish is feta with honey and sesame just yummy!

Food lovers

Our two favorite spots for breakfast are:

Kivotos ton gefseon at Pollonia, instead of sea view you will find a beautiful garden (something rare for the island). They offer different options for breakfast and they have lots of local products. We always buy herbs such as mountain tea, chamomile, and fliskouni as we want to take a taste of Milos to get us through the cold winter!

For a local breakfast in the Mouratos bakery in Triovassalos while enjoying a view of the sea.. You need to try the local pitarakia – we won’t spoil the surprise by giving you more details on that one – just try them out!

Lunch / Dinner

Go for a nice lunch by the sea with fresh fish go to Mikros Apoplous in Adamas (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g635606-d2436202-Reviews-Mikros_Apoplous-Adamas_Milos_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html ).

Oh Hamos, is one of our favorite places to eat on the island! Unfortunately not only for us so expect long queues in the evening as they do not accept reservations. We suggest you go there for an early lunch in order to have a better experience. The tavern’s specialty is keftedakia (meatballs) and the Hamos salad! You’ll find a handwritten menu, delicious home-cooked food, and beautiful garden surroundings..

Close your day with a gourmet organic dinner at Nostos Seafood while enjoying the view from their awesome balcony!

Another great option for dinner is Mikros Apoplous, one of the most beautiful seafront restaurants in Milos. Great selections of seafood , fresh local fish, coctails and more!

In for a treat

We love desserts so our recommendations below will not disappoint you!

Try the famous solokatopita in Arethousa! Again, we don’t want to spoil the surprise, but this chocolate pie with homemade ice-cream is a must!

For more traditional greek desserts like baklava, galaktoboureko and kataifi you should visit Palaios at Plaka.

The most famous place for ice cream on the island is Aggeliki at Adamas, all ice creams are locally made!

Akri

After a long day, relax with a drink at one of the bars at Adamas port. For tasty cocktails and ambiance, we suggest Akri. Akri, means edge in Greek and it certainly lives up to its name.

In the beginning we mentioned that this is our favourite Greek island, but trying to describe the vibe of Milos is very difficult – only by seeing the colors first-hand can you truly understand its beauty.

We hope you will have a lovely stay!!
